Sun Ra left an indelible mark on jazz and 20th Century music as a whole. As a pioneer of Afrofuturism, he integrated cosmic philosophies and lyrical poetry into his compositions and was an early adopter of using free improvisation and was one of the first artists to use electronic keyboards.
Little is known about his early life and Sun Ra’s birthdate was only confirmed following his death in 1993. After moving to Chicago, he began to lay the groundwork for his signature transformative approach to music with his ‘Arkestra.’
Fusing all manners of free jazz, the avant-garde and funk, Sun Ra’s music transcended labels and genres and occupied its own space.
